Gillian - T-shirt

My t-shirt design is of an ant with cordyceps unilateralis fungus growing out of its back. GROSS, I know, but also kind of beautiful - that's why I decided to do this.

I heard about this fungus for the first time on the glorious Planet Earth; from the fungus's Wikipedia:

The spores enter the body of the insect through its spiracles, where they begin to consume the non-vital soft tissues. When the fungus is ready to spore, its mycelia enter the ant's brain and change how it perceives pheremones, causing the insect to climb to the top of a plant and use its mandibles to secure itself to the stem. The fungus then kills the ant, and the fruiting bodies of C. unilateralis grow from its head and explode, releasing the spores.

When I saw pictures of the fungus, I liked that it grew in a lot of different forms, and I liked the look of these fantastical fungal bodies stretching out of an ant. Ideally, the fungi would be sprawling over the t-shirt, following the body's natural contours, but since we're limited to an 8x11 space, this reaching effect is essentially impossible to achieve.
