I saw Brian Jungen's series of tribal masks a few years ago in New York, and they have remained in my mind since. Jungen created dozens of masks resembling those of Northwestern Native Americans out of Nike Air Jordans. It raises question of the inherent values of materials; can these artificial materials be substitutes for wood and clay? Is there some quality that makes them less "honest"? And how do consumer products function as our cultural and religious symbols of today?
