Jacob and Esau (after 1435), gilt bronze.Lorenzo Ghiberti (1378-1455), a goldsmith, sculptor and architect, defeated Brunelleschi to create a 28 panel door for the Baptistery of St. John in Florence, Italy. "The Gates of Paradise" took him 20 years to complete. The panels demonstrate his grasp on linear and atmospheric perspective. The foreground figures are more defined, clear and larger than those in the back ground. The pillars and floor tiles appear to recede into the background towards a common vanishing point. The figures and structures have shadows and depth that make them seem like three dimensional objects.
