Gillian - Translation, Imitation, Emulation

When I think great art, I think children's book illustrations. And what better example of brilliance is there than Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are? I picked a classic picture from the book, redrew the contours and some of the details in pencil, then watercolored it in. I chose not to use Sendak's cross-hatching technique, because even though I like it, the thing that really appeals to me about her visual style ar the bold body shapes of the monters. For that reason, I chose to focus mainly on them - that's also the reason I eliminated the leaves in the background; I didn't want to detract from the strong, plump forms of the figures in the foreground.
