18 - Kat -- What is Art?

Ultimately, there is no all-encompassing definition of art. Does art require skill? Intent? A creator? A viewer? Does it depend on context? There are some things that pretty much everyone agrees is art--for instance, the Mona Lisa. But it is the ambiguous cases that make pinning down a definition tricky. Even some works that are part of the art historical cannon are not considered art by many people. Some of Rodin's sculptures are considered pornographic by many museum-goers. Although considered a brilliant example of Constructivist painting, many people scoff at the idea that Malevich's black square is high art because there is little evidence of the artist's skill.
So what is art? What isn't art? Does it even matter?
