9 - Sofia Castello: Jump

I think the trick to good art is depicting the world around us, which everyone sees, in a new and different way. In a way that speaks to who the artist is and his/her perspective of the world, transmitting that twist to the viewer. We all see the world as it is, in terms of colors, shapes and forms. An artist captures unique moments, or exaggerates certain traits, in order to portray the world in a way that communicates a distinct thought or feeling. Art makes us see beyond the obvious.
This photograph is from a series by Phillippe Halsman, in which he asked his subjects to jump while he took their picture. I feel that this element of spontaneity allows a window into who the subject is, showing him suspended in a one-of-a-kind moment.
