The Bubbles Project is this thing in new york city where some group put up empty talk bubbles on a bunch of ads and people wrote in whatever they want into the bubbles. I feel like this is a fun take on originality in art - it turns a communal and public space into a personal artistic expression. While I do think that advertisements can have some artistic merit in their own right, they also represent the mass/groupthink/consumer culture that is constantly bombarding public and private spaces. This form of art is re created countless times over and is created to appeal to millions. With the addition of the the thought bubbles, The Bubble Project is inviting the average citizen to have a dialogue and add their own personal originality to these mass produced and conformity inducing texts. The placement of these individualized text bubbles adds another layer of originality to this public and communal art - the product is original not only in form, but in time and space. The advertisement is placed in a specific area - perhaps with a specific demographic in mind - and in a specific time. In some way I feel like these art peices are extremely original because they exist in a certain place - not just the canvas - but geographically and physically. I think that this freedom and opportunity for the average person to take part in art and make it so fun, imaginative and highly original is a beautiful thing.
