
Francesca portrays space in his "Ideal City" with an extraordinary use of orthogonal lines and shadow. The city is conveniently illustrated in a grid-plan so that Francesca could use one-point linear perspective. The vanishing point is centered on the slightly opened door in the center of the painting, and the orthogonals of the piazza and facades direct the eye to this opening. The buildings become smaller as the viewer eye approaches the vanishing point. He also employs atmospheric perspective in the sky, starting with a dark blue in the foreground and ending with an almost-white/blue on the horizon. The cylindrical building in the center and the octagonal wells in the corners are convincing because of their shadows that fade from dark to light according to their sides. The light source comes from the left and casts shadows to the right.
