Olivia - Masaccio

The Tribute Money (1425)

Masaccio uses several techniques to create a convincing sense of space in this painting.  Moving from right to left, the people get smaller and smaller, and thus look farther and farther away.  Additionally, the trees to the left mimic the groups of people, also growing smaller.  Masaccio uses atmospheric perspective as well.  The cool colored water, sky, and mountains sink back into the page, and the warm colored dirt, people, and clothes jump forward.

Trinity (1428)

The "vanishing point" is slightly more apparent in this painting.  The grid on the arch shows converging lines toward this imaginary point.  Also, the pyramidal shape (two women in front, two women in middle, Jesus at the apex) emphasizes the depth by forming an illusion of converging lines at Jesus.
