This is Paolo Uccello's Niccolo Mauruzi da Tolentino at the Battle of the San Romano. Uccello used the lines of the hills in the background, smaller figures in the background, and difference in shade to create depth in this oil painting. I also noticed that the swords and/or crosses on the ground create lines that "recede" to some vanishing point. Uccello was an Italian painter who lived from 1397 to 1475. He focused completely on prospective and creating depth in his paintings.
