The reading made me think of this NOVA ScienceNOW episode....yes, I do watch them, and yes, they are awesome...
Someone was hired to copy a famous piece of Van Gogh's art and 3 teams of scientists set out to tell the original from the fake using various technology. This is a photo of The Reaper that was one piece of art analyzed on the show. But these are copies that attempt to perfectly copy the original, the artists are not making any purposeful changes to the pieces, their brush strokes are stilted, the process of creation is very different. But when I looked at these copies I still found them to be moving and therefore valuable, but perhaps not original. Although, I don't know how much I can really say about this topic....I realize that the only way I have been able to experience the masterpieces of artists like Van Gogh is to view pictures of them I find in books or online.
