Neel Odedara - Art Reproduced

In thinking about a copy of an original piece of art, the first thing that came to mind is a sculpture that I see almost everyday. This piece, despite the fact that it is just a 2nd hand copy, has become an iconic symbol on campus. It projects an aura of pride and strength that permeates this university. In thinking about a copy of an original piece of art, the first thing that comes to mind is the sculpture of Marcus Aurelius mounted on a horse on Lincoln field. This is not an original piece, and Brown has no historical connection to the original that I know of. However, despite these realities, the sculpture is no less meaningful. As a copy, it is able to reach a wider audience, and inspire more as I'm sure the original sculpture was meant too. Additionally, it lends a certain character to the university, which more than makes up for a lack of authenticity. To me, the value of a piece of art lies in what you gain from its presence, rather than its rarity or originality.
