This is Pisanello's "The Virgin and Child with Saint George and Saint Anthony Abbot." He creates the sense of space and depth in a few ways - first, there's far more detail in the foreground than the background; the people (including the Virgin and Child in the sky) are far more complex than the sky and forest behind them. Second, Pisanello uses shadows in the folds of their clothing to create a sense of depth. He also uses proportional sizes to suggest distance - clearly, the old man in the front isn't taller than the trees in the forest, but it is suggested that they are far away because they are small. Finally, Pisanello overlaps parts of his picture to indicate their spatial relation to the viewer - the hat overlapping the horse's head, the stick overlapping the left side of the old man's garment.
