Hannah M: Fra Angelico

This work is by Fra Angelico, an Italian painter who lived from 1395-1455. Fra Angelico was a Dominican friar, and was famous for his religious paintings and frescos.
In this piece, he creates depth by using a single vanishing point in the center of the piece. While we see the main door frame straight on, the arches and pillars on the side slant backwards, showing space and depth in the painting. Through the door, there is a smaller door and the narrowing carpet provides greater depth. Through shadings in the folds of the cloth, the blue sky background, and shadows, he also creates depth in the piece.
Many of his other pieces also use slanting arches/pillars to create depth and space on the canvas.
