Nic Mooney: Grid Copy

I decided to tackle Torii Kiyonaga's "The Walk" because it is the opposite of what I feel most comfortable doing. Since my drawings are usually very messy and crazy, I thought trying to draw something elegant and simple would be the best learning experience. Trying to be precise made me a little bit crazy some of the time, but I feel like I learned something about drawing trees, fabric, and somewhat proportional people, all things I usually try to avoid. I especially enjoyed the tree, which combines some realistic and some surreal elements in the original, and it definitely became my favorite part of my drawing. Some things did not work as well...in my attempts at mimicry, I neglected to make my lines more interesting and varied, aside from the tree. And some parts are a little distorted or just bizarre...I'm not sure how I didn't notice until just now that the baby turned out to be Quasimodo.

That greyness on the right of my copy is not actually part of the picture, but a result from scanning.
